How are you preventing Avian Flu in your flock?

Well if people follow rules it shouldnt get any worse I think california had it few years ago was bad because of the hiding/moving of birds

I’m pretty sure that virulent new castle disease not avian influenza.

I am doing about the same thing. I am doing all the bio security advised in the USDA Defend the Flock program. But I would like to allow them a bit of free range time in our garden. They have been ndoors all winter! We have no waterfowl near us, and no cases n our state yet. Can anyone advise me on this?

You’ll have to decide. There are nine states with confirmed cases now. The birds all get together in the south for winter and are migrating north throughout the US now. Any bird can carry it, not just poultry or water fowl.

My flock is inside, in their roofed coop and run. Loosing the entire flock isn't something we want to happen, so we're doing our best to prevent it. We might have to remove a few older hens and a rooster, also not part of our plan for the year, but might save the rest, so worth it.
Keep up with the USDA/ APHIS site for best information, and how things are being managed around known positive flocks.
And we are hoping for the best!

I live in farm county. If they come for a flock, they will get them all. Me claiming they have a covered run won’t stop the euthanasia.
My girls live a lovely life with daily free ranging on my little farm. As someone said on here “great life and one bad day” is better for me than keeping mine contained. They don’t know total confinement and they wouldn’t be happy with it. As I’ve said, it won’t save them if the EPA or whatever govt agency comes for them.

If they come for my four spoiled chickens, I don’t have chickens. Screw the govt. If we’ve learned anything, two weeks to flatten the curve, is bs. I’m on the west coast, off grid in very, very rural area on a mountain. They can live in the garage if they have to. My chickens aren’t sick. These fascists aren’t getting them.

Florida confirmed several cases today.
My run is covered with bird netting but it does little to keep smaller birds out. I have a large flock and keeping them completely contained or even just putting a solid roof over the run isn’t a viable option. And like someone else said I doubt it will do me any good if it reaches my area considering I live within a few miles of several chicken farms/plants which would likely put me well within the kill zone.

I guess my question would be how long does this type of outbreak usually last? Are we talking months, years or even longer?

The west coast is safe for the time being. But staying alert on the news will help with handling the situation and to be informed.
