How are your chickens doing in the 100 degree heat?

Devora....when I first installed the mister system, the hens were afraid of it and stayed away. It was something new and it made a noise they didn't understand. It only took a few days before they didn't care and now they gather in the mist because they know it's cooler there.

I have heard of some people putting out a little tub of water for the chicks to wade in. I think I'm going to try that and see what happens.

The misters really help to cool things down. In fact, even though the 40' run is about 50' from the back of my house, it actually helps to cool down the entire back yard area. I like it!

I've been planning on putting in a mister system, mostly for my alpacas, who are designed for snowy mountain terrain rather than blistering Texas heat. But I'm wondering how well misters work when the humidity is already 70-90%? Don't they work on the idea that the evaporation cools the air? I'm not sure how much evaporation I'll get under the present conditions... probably just puddles, which I already have from the, uh, bountiful rains.

The critters already have box fans that run 24/7 and all of them come in for a little siesta during the hot midday.

Well it is 110+ here in AZ! My girls are still laying. They get big blocks of ice in the
waterers, and I hose down the run in the afternoon. they really love that! I also put Apple
Cider Vinegar in the water (just a capful). I think it perks them up. They are panting and holding out their wings part of the day. Also shade ..shade..shade:)

Well, I guess everyone is right when they say that our chickens are spoiled. The have an air conditioner in their coop so it stays right around 78-82 degrees in their coop. Everyone is laying really well and I can happily say that I see no open mouths or wings being spread.

I'm sure they'd like it but if a HDTV is heading to my house it's going in my bedroom...

I made my hubby put it in cause one day I went to check on them and a couple were almost gone due to the heat despite everything I did. Had a mister going, 2 liter coke bottles frozen with ice, windows galore and a fan going. Yet it was almost 120 degrees in the coop. Silly chickens wouldn't go outside even though there was shade. So poor hubby installed it when he came home and found all the chickens (20 at the time) in the dog kennels in the family room and the guest bathroom. I must have somehow got my point across.

Wow, those chickens are spoiled!!! It's been really hot and muggy here in MI also. I've got water bowls all over the yard for them to drink. I put in a fan in the coop last night and still have it on for the layers! Poor things look so hot... They love to get watermelon and other cool treats. Hope this heat wave breaks soon. Haven't seen rain in weeks!
Stay cool everyone!!!
