Silkies are very good layers, at least until they start getting broody. They do make good pets if handled often.

They are smaller than grocery store large eggs. I think when you cook with them you double the number...but I'm not sure.

Silkies aren't known as great layers but, generally they are docile and can be good pets. Because of their strong tendency to go broody - a lot of people have them for just that reason. They can swap out the silkie's eggs and put fertile eggs from any breed under them. They will raise them as their own chicks.

Lots of great egg layers out there that also make great pets! The Orpingtons are really big on the laying and are very docile and friendly. I am a huge fan of the Orps and they are all I keep. Here is a couple of nice charts that list the breeds and all their attributes....
