how big are the rocks in chicken grit supposed to be?

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to say I get my "grit" from the side of the road. Little rocks roughly the size of dried peas. I dump a little pile in my pens every month or so including winter. Seems like it works good, no problems that I noticed.

I've always just used all purpose sand. Should I use something different??

fine sand = bad
course sand = good
