how big do guinea fowl get???.......are they REALLY LOUD ???

mine sound like howler monkeys shrieking.... and i only have 5!

but

i was over at the neighbors when they 'went off' -- and from their house they just sound like regular birds. so the question may be...how far away are your neighbors??

:)

mine are about as big as smallish-standard hens. they are not as big as by BR's or RIR's

I can be in a dead sleep (I work shift work) with 2 fans on every door and window in my house secure and when my 2 adult guineas and 7 keets alert at the far end of my 5 acre pasture, I'm awake, very awake. My male sounds like automatic weapon fire. So I would equate their loudness to a gun range w/ out ear protection

But, they are funny and eat things I don't want crawling on me...so I'm ok w/ that.

They are pretty loud especially when it is feeding time. I have 39 left as of today in the coup which is about 100ft from my bedroom window. I would have to say that the pekin ducks are way louder than the guinea hens. With the Chinese geese being about equal to the guineas.

I wish I could somehow upload my clip of my young ones...they are so loud! Sadly enough Its my ringtone on my cell phone. lol

I had the weirdest experience tonight. DH and I were out feeding and putting up critters. When I went to the back pasture, it was QUIET!!!

I called and called and suddenly the guineas appeared like the helicopters in Apocolypse Now! Turns out they were on the far side of the pond.

Silly critters.

I haven't any, but my friend has 4 of them and they shriek like harpies if anything moves or makes a sound...ANYTHING.

They are very capable of flying really high, and get on her roof and run back and forth shrieking, because from there they are high on a roof, on a hill and can see movement for a LONG distance...and want to tell you all about it at a jillion decibels.

They still shriek at me, and they've seen me forever, but I don't live there, so my daily visits don't count for diminished alarm...I'm still the greatest evil as far as they are concerned.

Great stranger alert, I'll say!

I have 11. Mine are 5 months old. Their pen is about 30 feet from my house. They are the same size as my heritage Rhode island Reds chickens. Since its November in Maine I attributed the shrieking and screaming as not having enough insects to eat. The sound is deafening when you get near them and they never stop unless they are swallowing. Millet time is the absolute worst with several of them doing a scratchy growl honking sound and the others shrieking. My husband puts me on speaker phone at work so he can have his co-workers hear the mess. The group of guineas is referred as a confusion. It certainly is a confusion when they are worked up. They also get on our roof and stomp so loud as they run from one end to the other it sounds like there are people up there stomping around. Reminds me of a bad Alfred Hitchcock movie. If you get any don't get more than 2. I promise they will take care of your yard between bugs and rodents. I just had someone come up to chase them away from the road. They are funny and comical to watch, but not without hearing protection.

Hello jl2439! Welcome to BYC.

I enjoyed reading your description of your storm trooper guineas on your roof. They can be a noisy bunch, but you gotta know them to love them. So quirky! We have a flock of 12 ( the number changes by the day depending on the predators) and they are 6 months old. Most are the French Jumbos, but 4 are regular pearls. I have noticed an increase in volume with the flock as well. I blame it on adding the 4 regulars - the Jumbos were a pretty quiet bunch until the newbie regulars joined them. But as you mentioned, it may also be related to the lack of bugs. We are in Central New York, but love vacationing in Maine. Beautiful state! Check out the Guinea talk thread. There are several of us who post regularly in that thread and we love sharing our stories and pictures. You take care and hope to hear more from you again soon.
