how big do the nest boxes need to be

We used an old bookshelf, put some dividers in it and a board across the front and then we used buckets tonight..you can see both here on this thread..buckets are on top of wooden nests. Lots of nice nesting ideas are here on this site.

Check out tis search I did for nest box dimensions. There are atleast 3 posts there.

I think the basic size is 12" x 12" for standard breeds. We use 12" x 16" for our banties because we built them out of an old fish fry brooder.

Mine a 14in. wide by 14in.high by 12in. deep and they keep my 12 hens happy.
