Hi i have 14 chickens im building there coop. i need to know how big there coop should be they already have plenty of room to range out side. they are all egg layers. thanks

The minimum size is 4 square feet per bird in the coop and minimum 10 sq feet in the run! You really want to give as much room as you can. The more room they have the happier, healthier, and productive they will be! It will also be easier to keep clean and less often!

God Bless!

The rule of thumb on here is 4 square feet per bird in the coop. If you have 14 birds, you need at least 56sf in the coop, therefore you need a coop that is approx 7'x8'

ETA: yeah, what he said...LOL

Based on the birds in your signature, I'd say an 8 x 8 would be great. Based on the 4ft. per bird rule of thumb, you could do with a 7 x 8, but why waste material??? You could do with a slightly smaller coop if you live in a year round warm area where they would never be confined to it for ice/snow/severe cold. If you're in an area that gets cold winters, bigger is always better.

Yeah, 8x8 will work for your girls, but you might as well go 10x12--you know you're going to want more.......

I personally would do 8x16. If you decide you want more chickens or you can build a storage closet in it. 8x8 or 8x16 are easiest because plywood is 8x4

Might as well make it as big as you can - soon you'll see another cool breed, and then another cool breed and end up like the rest of us - more chickens than we can count!
