How can deal with a chicken loss?

Back in June, I lost a chicken to a hawk! But I did not expect it. How can I deal with future losses?

Make a closed coop and run. I'm saving up to make one. Have had the same problem in the past several times. So for now we're keeping our hen and chicks locked up most of the time with food and water, we let her out for a while and basically work as chicken "herders" lol if there's even that concept; when we finish we herd her back to where she sleeps and lock her up again. Every time the rooster gives the alert we also rush out and scare off any Hawk/Eagle or the likes. Lots of work, and we hope we can solve that soon, we have more than enough space to make them a closed coop and run. Maybe you could even try a chicken tractor.
