how can i stop racoons and opossums from coming close to my coop

I believe raccoons have taken two of mine this week. One Monday and one Friday. How do they run off with them? Still alive or do they kill them first. I'm hoping there was no suffering. Sunday Night my husband forgot to lock them. I counted on him since my newborn of was 2 weeks at the time. The rest of the week I have locked them up. Friday night I went out 20 min after sunset and the 2nd one was gone. I believe racoons because Tuesday night 3 am (so wed.) I discovered out back after hearing noise the feather remains of the Monday chicken and what last piece of it the raccoons (3 of them) were eating on the bottom of back staircase. They are horrible horrible creatures.
