How can I tell if the quail eggs I purchased are fresh?

I think I counted 24 it's really hard because they are all running around so fast! I'm just so fortunate to have any!

Can anyone answer this: By the way some are pale coloured and others are dark. Does this have anything to do with their sex?

Could be that some are Goldens.

yeah conturnix come in different colors usually you can only feather sex browns and goldens but not until they get all their feathers in. Post pic may be helpful.

Yes OK here is a pic of some very new ones! I can't get over how tiny they are. It's really scary the first time you hold one! BTW, I opened the rest of the eggs tonight and I got a very bit shock to find a late one still alive (only just). It's now flopping around all over the incubator floor! All of the eggs besides one had an embryo! 3 chicks had died after pipping and the rest (4) had died halfway thru. SO overall I'm really happy with the results even though the initial experience was bad.
