How can you make the image size smaller?

I have got my avatar but, I can't get a real picture to come up. The bar says the image is to big how can I make the file size smaller.

Go to frequently asked questions, thats how I just got my pic in my avatar. It will tell you a web site to go to that is so easy to use. Trust me if I could do it, you can...........ed
