I have that broody hen. However, another hen is getting in the box and laying eggs, too. So I gathered up all the eggs. But how can I tell if they have developing chicks? I used a super bright flashlight, some you can see through, some seem solid, so I took those back to the nest. They weren't out of the box long enough to get cool. I did this in 5 minutes.
How do you do this when you want some to hatch some to take up, like when the second hen is also sharing the nesting crate.

The best way is to arrange things so that no other birds have access to the brooding hen and her nest. Other hens laying in the nest can result in cracked/broken hens and may even cause the setting hen to inadvertently move to the wrong box. Staggered hatches generally do not end well.

She went broody before I realized. I usually just have hens for eggs, they lay them and walk off. Since this girl went broody, I figured I'd let her raise any hatchlings. But I don't want to waste eggs that the other hen lays. The broody is a Buff Orpington and the other is a Salmon Favorolle, both docile breeds. Daddy could be either a baby or a Salmon Favolle .......this will be interesting if they do hatch.
