I have three plymouth barred rock "look a likes"..and what do i mean by that?

Well my uncle crossed a rhode island red with a light sussex and some how produced a perfect looking plymouth rock.

*****How can you tell if a plymouth barred rock is a pure bred or not?******

I just hatched out 12 of them from a breeder that said his Roo and Hen were pures....but if my uncle was able to produce the same looking thing from another breed....how can i tell if he was honest or not?

Do you have pictures of your uncles's birds? and I'm guessing you're referring to barred Rocks?

There's a lot more to it than a black and white bird. A true RIR is much heavier and built different than a Rock. I'm also thinking the Sussex maybe weren't Sussex but Delawares, cause Sussex don't carry barring and the Delawares do. Plus, Sussex have white legs which would be dominant. So, while it's really not hard to re-create a color from different crosses, there's a lot more to a bird than color. Body shape is too often overlooked.

A bird is generally considered pure bred when it reasonable confirms to the SOP for the breed, and breeds true. Since birds don't carry pedigrees like lots of mammals, you just have to educate yourself on what your specific breed should look like. Or be content with mixes, like some of us

i am not completely sure....ill have to ask him. The birds have very white legs... should they be yellow? in rooster and hen?

well im not going to breed from them anyway.. I recently hatched out 12 pures and am waiting til they get older so i can sex them. Do you know of any good websites for studying what plymouth Rocks should look like?

Rocks should have yellow legs, yes.

If you're interested in knowing what a particular breed should look like, you can find that breed's club or organization on line and see what resources they have. BYC also has a section for breeding Standard of Perfection birds, and there are threads on Rocks there. I'd advise to to more reading than posting on that section at first, and thoroughly read and understand the title at the beginning. That section is for folks who take breeding pretty seriously and they've been known to be quite blunt with newbies

. If you can just read and not post until you have a better understanding though, it can be a great resource as there are decades of experience there. Plus, lots of pictures of nice, well-bred birds.
