just wondering what the winter low temperatures are in some different places to tell how cold it can get without geese having problems. where I am from it gets to be at least -8 degrees farenheight and I usually don't have any problems but I am adding some new geese to the collection (sabastapols) and wondering if they can take the cold temperatures also??? - Jay in MA

Last winter was one of our coldest on record. While we are used to seeing -10F at night, we had many -25F nights. My geese (dewlap Toulouse, African and production Toulouse) live outside 24/7. They bunkered down in deep shavings/hay in their sleeping area and were fine.

One of my friends has sebbies (and many other breeds) and he also keeps his geese outside, but he puts a heat lamp in their run-in shelter, as he says they are not as hardy as other breeds.

Last winter it got down to -37°F the Chinese geese had a little frostbite on their knobs and some of the chickens had frostbite on their combs. Other than that everyone was fine.

We normally have lows in the -20F to -30F. The lowest temperature we had was on Jan.19 1994 it was a bone chilling -53F. We have Michigan's record for coldest temperature recorded. Amasa Michigan. I keep 2- 100w bulbs going in coops to keep the coops a little warmer when the temps drop to -20 F I do shut the lights off for 8 hrs. so they can have a normal sleep cycle. I have had a little frostbite on very tips of roosters comb but I try to keep Vaseline on the comb and wattles for protection.

wow so these geese can take really really cold temperatures I should be fine thanks for all the info. - Jay in MA
