No, you do not need a roo...unless you want fertilized eggs? They squat before they are ready to lay. Ours did it for, oh, about two weeks before we saw an egg. How old are your girls?

I always thought it was age, food, sunlight that affected egg production. Maybe how much they get some lovin' as well?

my chickens are 7 months old

hardly any sunlight over here

gets dark around 5:30
