How come sometimes the "Smilies" don't show up when clicked?

I'll be typing a response, click the icon I'd like, and when my post shows up, there's just the

words w/out the little dude? Sometimes it works, sometimes not, both w/in the same post. What's up with that? Thanks for any direction!
edited to say, "hey - I typed the words, and the icon showed up! But I'll click on the icon and get words!

Try to make sure you have spaces between the code for the smiley and anything else you happen to type.
