Aw, you & your girl did not deserve what happened. I'm sorry it happened. I hope something really, really good happens to you soon because you were obviously trying to do the right thing in this situation.
I am very sorry for your loss, some may judge you, but not all. My bigest concern for my chickens (which I get next spring) is my own dogs & the neighbors dogs...more so the neighbors. They do not feed their dogs, their dogs go in my woods & eat what they can catch! My husband is already planning on a double fence!! Again, very sorry!
Oh my goodness everyone! Thank you for your sweet words of support. I really appreciate all of the kind thoughts and the hugs. This is a pretty wonderful community.
You were not foolish... you are a good person who loves animals. The dog was just doing what dogs do instinctively, and your chicken went fast so didn't have to deal with pain. I lost a chicken recently who I let free range, knowing our neighbour's German shepherd (who protects all the pets of the neighbourhood by keeping the predators away) was in the house and couldn't watch over my girls. Then I went to town without uttering the words to my husband that I utter every time I go to town, "Watch the girls and put them to bed before you go in." Arggghhhhh... I feel your pain, but we both know that this too shall pass. I like Poohbear's suggestion to name your next chicken the same in honor of your lost one. I will do the same. I love having a Punkin around!
I'm so sorry. You tried to do the right thing. You are a caring person. I'll bet Gee Gee is very tame like my Lola, and I think they lose their fear from alot of things, and it can be dangerous.
I know chickens will break my heart cause every living thing out there wants a piece of them.
It's always the favorite isn't it. Sorry it happened.
I had a hand fed chipmunk (not really a comparison by animal but by incident) and i was dog sitting a dog who is old and lamed out and man, my baby came over for her treats and the dog snatched her up quick and tossed her into a stone wall! You never now about dogs, they have instinct! Now I know.....before I trusted them because i like to see the good in everything before I judge. You and I would either make horrible or wonderful jurors!! Depends on what side of the law your on. I just want to punch the owners for you! So uncaring......I'm so sorry!
