How deep should I put the shavings for day-olds?

I have at the most 26 chicks hatching out on saturday and I was wondering about how deep everyone puts the shavings for their day-old chicks?

I use 3-4" pine shavings and cover with paper towels for the first week.

Well, what I am planning to do is put down shavings, and then put down paper towels over the shavings for the first week and then take the towels off. I was wondering how deep to put them under the paper towels and after that?

I only put an inch or two down...they kick them around and get them their food and waterers too easy....and thats with the feeders and waterers up on bricks....
