Today my dog go out somehow and killed one of my chickens. I only noticed when my dog was chasing my 2nd chicken, i ran outside and caught my dog. I locked my dog up and then i relized my 1st chicken lying down still alive but only its head moving. I picked her up and tried to give her water, i check her out whilst doing this. She only at one cut, barley any blood. No blood what so ever on the ground just feathers. It was fairly deep and was next to her leg. She looked fine just a bit shocked. Head still moving and eyes moving. After about a minute of her in my hands she closed her eyes and head drooped. She had no movement. She passed. Did she die from shock or what?

Welcome to BYC! Sorry for the loss of your chicken. She could have either died from shock or from internal injuries. Hopefully you can secure your dog (or else your chickens) so that it will not happen again. Good luck with your flock.

Or maybe broke something inside

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Chickens are delicate and internal injuries can kill them fast. If the head was only moving, she probably had a spinal cord injury. But any other or several internal injuries could have killed her. I am so sorry.

I agree with Michael - most likely shock and/or internal injuries. Another possibility is heat exhaustion/stress if it was particularly hot and the dog harassed her for an extended period of time.

She most likely died of shock. When animals expect to be eaten alive, they go into shock, which keeps them from feeling the pain. Dogs and chickens need to be kept apart. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog.

I am sorry for her and you, she never had a chance against a dog.
