I grew up with chickens too, but hadn't had any for several years. Two years ago I bought some Silkie eggs and tried to hatch them, and I found BYC!

I got 2 out of 22 eggs to hatch

but I've improved greatly since then!

I'm almost 51; when I was but a wee lass I used to spend summers in NC on a farm. That was only up until I was about 7-8. My aunt had chickens but apparently I got sent to collect eggs from what I know now was a broody hen...not real fond of chckens after that!
I started with my own chickens in July 2010 & am happily working my way to raising meaties & one day hatching my own if I dont come up with a broody hen any time soon!

I was exposed as a very young child...5 or 6 maybe, at my grandmas house we had chickens, turkeys, and rabbits. However, not until later did the farming bug bite me. I was given 7 guineas almost 4 years ago and knew/remembered just about nothing N O T H I N G about birds or keeping any kind of livestock. I did a LOAD of research and found this place and well now I have goats, turkeys, ducks, chickens, want sheep, and a cow, and have had rabbits and quail as well. I blame BYC to a large degree for all the encouragement and enabling that goes on around here

My family laughs at me, but I got some of them started too

I almost have my mom talked into raising a pig on her place

I was born into birds, my great grandfather, grandfather, and father all raised the gamefowl. I started breeding birds myself about 8 going on 9 years ago, and have been basically doing it my own way for 4 years.
