First check their vents.

A laying bird (or one very close to laying) will have a moist, pink vent. A pullet who hasn't started/isn't close yet will have a smaller, dry vent.

You can also check the position of their pelvic bone. Can't find the article about that, though.

I wish I could help. All mine are bantams, and they're not old enough to lay.

How many do you have in all? Do they all lay brown eggs, except for the EE?

I think I figured it out. I have 9 chickens 3 EE, 2 Lavender Orpington, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Australorp and 1 Brahma. When I walked outside my favorite girl Nubia the Australorp did a shimmy shake and squatted in front of me. She wasn’t doing that yesterday and no one else is.

mine got all my hopes up quite early before they were laying. Some of them were squatting a month before their first egg, and others had wet vents for 2 weeks before their first egg. Nubia sounds like a strong contender for laying that precious first egg!
