My friend said his 2 year old Ameraucanas did not lay at all last winter!! If this is true , it could be a problem for me since I have about 45 of them.

What kind of light? Any old lightbulb? 100 W or 40 W or infrared bulb?

i didnt have any artificial light this winter, only a red heat lamp when needed and Id say they laid 5 out of 7 days a week. Actually they laid more than my RIR.

Mine don't lay past their fall molt (Nov.-Dec.)until about the beginning of March in our New York winters. However, I don't supply them with artificial light. Winter is pretty bad here, so I like to give them a break.

I love this group!
What are the winning numbers for this weeks powerball?

My Amercuanas I had laid pretty good all year except for late fall to early winter in Feb. They will start laying then. It is not unusual for them to cease laying during the winter. They will lay in the early spring to late summer or late fall, depending how late they started.

Unless they were old hens.

I keep my Ameraucanas on at least 15 hours of light and they laid all winter long. However, we had one of the hardest, coldest winters with the most snow I've seen in a long, long time. During the coldest spells and the heaviest snowfalls, the production did drop off quite a bit.

On top of that, I've got a few birds that I'll be culling anyways because they aren't the best of layers as is.

I do hope we are talking about true Ameraucanas here and not EE's. Just FYI, mine are WBS Ameraucanas.

God Bless,
