How do chicken get respitory diseases?

also you can carry the germs from the feed store and that some one who has chickens with respiratory disease has been

also if you visit other peoples chickens they may have the disease

I always felt that feeding the wet mash probiotic to the birds every week kept their gut flora in tack and kep them in good shape

so get with the program of not going to other chicken folks barns
or to sales etc where people who have chickens that their bosies are accustom to the sickness and live on

these are the ones that you get the germs on your shoes or clothes from

people have birds who carry the respiratory disease and learn to live with it

I am curious WHAT DID THE NEW BIRDS HAVE THAT YOU FELT THEY BROUGHT THE RESPIRATORY DISES TO THE OLDER BIRDS?

email me for the wet mash probiotic recipe
any questions email me

I should have clarified that it can precipitate - but let's not leave out forget fungal causes. And chilling in younger birds. Well, and older birds as well for that matter. Technically all respiratory are from virus, fungus, or bacterium - or nutritional deficiency (hypovitaminosis A for example) but in real life practical poultry keeping weather can bring about a respiratory illness, said colloquially.

Actual poultry keeping is what I believe the concern was - how to keep one's birds well.

Determining what causes an illness requires all aspects of the flock's history to be considered. IF there are chickens brought in, that's always the top of my list if a respiratory illness occurred at the same time (or after the incubation period).

On the raining, I agree. I worry about that here (with younger free-rangers) because chilled birds are just less resistant to problems. But instead of covering the whole thing, consider a partial cover - maybe with a drop down in the roof's edge to help with blowing rain. It would be more economical, and still get a little more area for them.

Then your dh will be happier.

And you DO want the sun to hit a lot of the ground that your birds walk on.

I say that - but I have an area I nicknamed The Petting Zoo that is fenced off from the rest of the pasture. It's a rather large space - about 36x36. It's neither covered by wire nor a roof - but I've been thinking about the wire - and what a huge area..... /sigh It's daunting to look at that type of project isn't it?

TRY THIS
MAY I SUGGEST THIS TREATMENT
it will help the lack of vit's needed to restore gut flora and the wet mash probiotic will help the E.coli that so many sick bird do get

well maybe do this for all the birds at once
I would start with the Vit E and Vit B complex with wet mash
sickness causes so much problems on the chickens nervous system

A)
chickens do get some upset in the gut with E.coli and then it goes toa nervous disorder
natural probiotic wet mash with Vit E and Vit B complex added immediately
basically the chicken has some nerve damage from the E.coli do this immediately
need neurolodigal vit E and Vit B complex for E.coli and the nervous disorder Also the apple cider vineager in water

(1) 2 tbsp per gallon of water till chickens are well and then 2 times a week for life
for one chicken use 1 tbsp of ACV
1 pint of water

(2 immediately give the chicken 1000 mg capsule of liquid Vit E by cutting the end of the capsule and taking the vit E liquid and mix in wet mash probiotic

(2-B) total amt of capsules equals the total amt of chickens fed vit's multiply amt of recipe times amt of chickens fed it and the amt of vit's times amt of chickens given them

(3 also need to crush a vit B complex pill in tabsp and add tsp of water to it
put it in the chickens wet mash after it is disolved

(3-C) then give this to the chickens twice a week for two weeks should see much improvement

(4 Do both Vit's twice today then for 7 days till you see some improvement in the chicken

(5 today I would see if the chicken will eat a wet mash with the Vitamins E and B complex
JUST MAKE 1/2 OF THE WET MASH GIVEN HERE FIRST TIME WITH THE VIT'S

(-B) THIS IS FOR ONE CHICKEN
natural probiotic wet mash
2 tbp of dry crumbles
3 tbp of milk sweet, sour or buttermilk
1 tbsp of non flavored yogurt
2 tbsp of apple sauce
put it on top so the chicken can smell and see it
mix good and put the
vit E liquid as directed in the wet mash
and crumble the Vit B complex tablet in a tabsp and add to the wet mash
**BESURE AND MIX VIT'S VERY GOOD IN WET MASH***

(6 Do this twice a day for 7 days to see if the chicken is better
then do this once a day for another week then once a week for a while
this should give the nervous system some stability and cure the bad E.coli in the gut

(6-A) they should clean it up in 20-30 minutes

(7 you can email by PM for more information and include this info so I remember what
also if you go to the top of your PC you will see the first line and that is the URL for your post
just copy it and email it back to me so I can read it for a update

this will help them get good gut flora
also put 2 tbsp of ACV in gallon of water and keep giving them this water for a week straight
then give it 3-5 times a week for life

Both you and dlhunicorn have such a huge amount of knowledge, and offer so much help to folks here. I have learned a tremendous amount from both of you.

I feel badly that what I saw as a simple clarification turned into a big discussion. The OP spoke of disease, as opposed to weather, as a cause.

Yes, of course, good poultry keeping is what it is all about.

Oh I love big discussions. To me they're a treat, so I'm very glad it turned into a one.

And it also allowed me to kinda fix some wording, so I'm really glad for that.

Do don't feel bad at all. I think it was a wonderful opportunity for discussion of some interesting things that effect our birds.

/hugs!

Thanks again everybody! My wonderful dh finished up their temporary area today. The hutch roof is like a 7 inch over hang on it too for rain cover. I still feel weird about the rain, but we didn't cover the whole fenced in area. Like this morning we had a few small rain showers and I didn't even let the flock out till it passed and I checked the weather on tv!
