I just came back from my grandparents house, and was treating her chickens for poultry lice. Long story short, the poultry lice was actually red mites and they were infested big time! We are not gonna be able to treat the chickens since we are to far away, and they don't have enough time. So we are gonna cull the flock and burn the chicken coop. If we decide to get more chickens we will make sure the area is mite free.
Anyway, sadly, while all this chickens were infested with mites, he decided to buy two more young chickens and throw them in with there mite infested flock. I checked them for mites and didn't see any, but I know that doesn't mean anything.
I have a flock of chickens and am thinking of adopting them and bringing them into my flock. I will separated them from the flock for as long as I must, and will do epsom salt baths, biodematouse earth, and whatever else I have to do to make sure there mite free.
What do you guys think of this. I really don't want my flock to get mites, but these young'ens will have no where to go if we cull the flock and don't get more chickens for my grandparents. I don't want to cull them too if there a chance ether will live. Wha do you think, any ideas on how to add them to my flock without giving my flock mites! Thanks so much! Avery

First of all, burning the coop down seems drastic. If you remove the poultry and then deal with the mites, it should be fine. You will have to kill several phases of life cycle( repeated disinfecting.)
Do you have a separate temporary roost for the chickens while you treat them for mites?

For my grandparents we don't believe we will get them more chickens. Hey already have a major rat problem in the coop, I've see 20 rats in the middle of the day, they are not afraid of people, and If they get a mite infestation again then It's not fair to there chickens. Plus we have no wear to put the chickens while we disinfect the coop, and since we live 2 hours form them, I can't rely on them to treat the chickens and mites. Over all, I am mostly wondering how I should bring the two hens that aren't infested with mites home, and introduce them to my chickens without giving my whole flock mites.

Thanks so much! We are just gonna burn the coop and cull the flock because my grandparents can't treat the chickens and they will probably die anyway int he end since I cant be there all the time. But to just eliminate the mites by getting rid of the coop and chickens, seems to be the most reasonable approach. I am super dissatisfy pointed but i feel I have tried my best. I just want to try and save the young gals he just bought so they don't have to be culled, because other wise they have no where to go. tHanks for the response, I really apppreciate it! Avery

Collect new birds during day as most of the mites will be off the birds at that time and treat them while in transit. Move them to a temporary location that is more or less outside and exposed to a lot of sunlight. Then repeat miticide treatment over a few days to kill what few mites remaining present. I would dose birds at night when mites most likely to be on them. After birds treated for a few days, then move them to new mite-free home.

I posted this on another thread you started. This is what I use. I'm an old lady who has had chickens for a very long time and have dealt with mites and lice. I'm pretty sure the wild birds introduce them. Rodents can too. I use permethrin. You do need to repeat treatments weekly for 3 or 4 weeks because it does not kill the pests eggs and then they hatch out and here we go again. I spray inside of the coops thoroughly every crack and crevice. I use poultry dust in the nest boxes. I do use shavings in my coops and nest boxes. I get it at TSC. It works for me. Good luck...

I know this chart is for mites.

Where do your grandparents live? Is there someone who can treat the coops and birds weekly for about a month?

Thats the problem, I would be fine with treating them, but we have no where to put them while we exterminate the coop, which is filled with them, and even if we did, I live to far away to treat them. I don't believe there help rwill be able to treat them good enough, and the chickens will die anyway. I am super disappointed that it got his bad, and I wish I could bring them all home and treat them, but I don't want to bring that many mites home to my flock. Plus I don have the room for all ten chickens. I am super disappointed, but I don't think its gonna work. They live in bothel though.
