How do I find quality breeders in my area? (SW PA)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but here is what I do.

Find the specific breed that you are after. Once you've found it, look for breeders through google. If you can't find them, look for breeders that have won in your area. Usually it will show their name and location and give some contact info. Contact them and ask about their stock and anyone else's in the area.

Thanks, old97s! Both of those sound like great tips! Does Jim Burton have a website, do you know? Do you know what kinds of chickens he breeds, in general?

Rodriguezpoultry--that's a great idea, too. I've google searched for breeders of other animals (horses, rabbits, dogs, etc.), don't know why I didn't think to do it for chickens. I'll give it a shot!

What breeds in particular are you looking for? Try to google the breed such as "Barnevelder breeders". Also try chicken related publications like Poultry Press, Backyard Poultry, etc.

Well - as for chicken breeders in SE PA - You could try the Lancaster Farming Paper - its a weekly newspaper (covers way more than just Lancaster) with tons of classifieds and mailbox market ads with stock/eggs for sale - there is also a list of poultry auctions in there - along with the going rates for birds. There is an auction in Manheim at Roots Market on Tuesdays - starts around 4 - poultry usually start til at least 5. There is also one in Ephrata at Green Dragon Market on Friday evenings - starts at 5 also. You would pry be safe to get chicks there - and adults if you know what you are looking for - but unless you are experienced, it might be tough to tell which animals are at the end of their life and which ones are in their prime. Lots of rare pheasants and ducks go through those as well.

Good suggestion. You might also Google for a breed club website. Many of the specialty clubs have websites now & they often include member lists. At the very least they would have contact info for club officers who might be able to help you. Both the American Poultry Association & American Bantam Association have website & they may lead you in the right direction.
