How do I get rid of flies?

I should have been more specific...by saying do this in your house.
I do not have fly problems in my coop, so i can't really offer advice.
I have found the small vacuum with hose to be very effective on a hatch in the house early this spring...works on fruit flies too....cap the end of hose when not actively capturing, throw out bag regularly

Spraying them with alcohol works to kill them also. In the country with goats and horses flies were always a summer problem, bug zappers kept the population down but they also kill beneficial insects. If you use vanilla think about using a natural one available at natural food stores. Many synthetic scents kill birds some carry warnings not to use near parrots due to law suits filed from parrot owners. Glade is one that is warned against on parrot websites. Fumes from dryer sheets can also kill parrots, I assume chickens aren't much different.

I have flies everywhere...not just in my coop, but in my house. I have cats that are outdoor as well as my chickens, and I guess that they probably come because of the cat food and the chicken feed. I have tried everything from fly spray to those sticky strips that you hang from the ceiling. Does anyone have any other ways to get rid of flies...?

I think you try some smoke from wood

Also try calcium stone powder but may be dangerous for chicks ?

Hi, this is my take on things...everybody has an opinion.... At my ranch in north central Texas, fly traps have been working in the barns in conjunction with sticky strips. In one barn, I have 2 fly traps, one higher, one near the ground, and sticky strips next to them, maybe 10 inches away. Flies, attracted to the stench, land on the sticky strips sometimes (they get covered so they do land there) and sometimes go in the traps. Often, I see flies on the small paracord suspending the traps, so I got the idea to hang a trap from the bottom of a sticky strip in my chicken "barn" (96' x 40' old rabbit barn until I get them a proper coop...I'm growing here...). That works great!

These "put water in the plastic bag and hang them" traps are NOT for indoor use...they REAK! (reek?)...they STINK! But they do catch flies.

I've read that foraging flies are near the ground.... Maybe putting traps nearer the floor/ground would help. Three of my four current traps are near the ground and working well, but so is the one about 4 feet of the ground. Same for the sticky strips. We used to use Golden Malrin (sp?) fly killer in the '80's in the Rabbit Barn. Worked great. I tried some about 10 years ago, about 6 feet off the ground, and was not impressed...maybe it changed, maybe the height of offering matters?

Suggestions to keep the areas clean and free of food/stench sources are good but require a fair amount of labor. Suggestions to use a fly swatter and electric swatters mean, unless you can get the government to compensate you for "scalps", you're backing up, not moving forwards, if you know what I mean.

Well you're going to find this GROSS....but I found it on YouTube and it worked for me. William Quinn on YouTube made two homemade ones:
In his next video he shows you the results which were amazing, then he made a video on how to dispose of the traps. I did it and flies died, died, died. Can't kill them all but gobs of them can't hang around my coop anymore, lol. However, I wouldn't use it in or near my house :he, dog poop is involved :tongue

Some of us just aren't meant to hang the sticky strips.....I am not kidding when I say I walked into my strip EVERY SINGLE TIME I went to check on rabbits. Done. If i can't be smarter then a fly strip, I can't be allowed to have one :th. What hair is left on my head and not on the sticky strip has thanked me for removing them, lol.

Thank you for bringing back some bad memories... :) I have stuck my head into my sticky strips where the chickens are...yes...but all those dead flies inspire me! :)

Oh, wow, you're in DENTON? Awesome...my ranch is in Bowie and I reside out of Decatur. Denton is a part of my old stomping ground (had dear friends in Corinth). Small world.

Well we all know, everybody in Texas knows everybody in Texas :lau. Have you been to Corinth lately ? I go to Decatur every week and will probably be moving that direction some time in the future. I have a farm and there's too many "city people" wanting to move to the country....lol, they don't even realize they are making the country "city" by moving here. I can't take all the traffic, trash on my property. Houses gettin so close I can hear their doors shut and people yellin at each other.....UGH....
