How do I get rid of the smell?

Welcome to chicken farming, friend!

Hi we have eight hens and a rooster in our pen and another 12 hen chicks were getting ready to add to the brood. It's impossible to move the pen around to get rid of the smell and yes its strong, were thinking of trying leaves scattered around the coop that can be raked up and changed as a way to stop some of the odor. Myself I'll take any other ideas as well as long as it's natural so it will not harm the birds.

Is the pen just dirt? What size is it? You might want to use sand and rake it as needed. That usually works pretty well.

The pen is 15' X 20" we plan on adding to the pen before the new hens are added to the brood right now its muddy wet from all the rain we have received once it dries up the smell will be gone for the most part, as much as we want to let them run loose during the day we dare not, we see fox and coyote on the property as well as numerous chicken hawks.

We have a dirt/sand run. When it rains, we rake a good layer of coastal hay over it. -eliminates muddy conditions and odor. After the rain is gone, we rake up the hay and add it to the compost.

That's interesting. We have four hens we let roam in our small yard, and then to be locked up at night, and we've had ours for a few weeks. The only smell I notice is if I actually open the door to let them out in the morning, and it's not that bad. As for the poo? It doesn't really have a smell and if you rake it into your grass, its great fertilzer!

I also have four girls and a very small garden, I had mine for well over 4 months now and I never noticed any smelll. I do clean their coop every morning and once again in the evening though.

We've had nine hens for about a year and two months now. The coop is cleaned daily, and the run is scooped about four times per day. -no odors at all until a good soaking rain. The mud seems to be the culprit of any stench. That's been our experience. Keeping a dry run (or placing material in the run to eliminate mud) eliminates odor.
