How do I humanly kill my sick hen

Do you know of any people that have done away with themselves with helium or C02 buildup?

Sadly yes I have known people that used a gas exit from life and I have also euthanized several animals over the years using said techniques myself... I have also seen numerous unedited videos on humans as well as animals being euthanized/suicide by helium/nitrogen/CO2/CO, they are out there in a Google search for anyone to see... And last but not least I have 2 years pre-med in college, that I draw upon... It's not simply my baseless opinion that it's painless and not cruel it's backed by science and medical fact, it's actually quite peaceful...

I'm willing to bet gassing a bird and watching it simply go to sleep is a lot less emotional and stressful than the actual act of holding it down and whacking the head off and having blood everywhere, but that is just my opinion...

@mightymax the gas released by the vinegar and backing soda is CO2 (same as dry ice) and the end result is the same a peaceful sleep, as you said in this case the CO2 is heavier so the chamber is built in reverse...

With the ax, blood doesn't fly everywhere. It's not messy. And I do put a sock over their face.
I've heard from someone who shoots them in the back of the head and I wonder if that's messy.
I don't think death actually has an "easier" way.

Not messy at all. It's quick, easy, and painless for the chicken.

Never said blood was 'flying' everywhere but to suggest there is no blood and no mess, when you axe their necks is, lets face it a little fib... I have seen my fair share of chicken slaughters, there is blood, feathers and spasming bodies when it comes to slaughter time... Although most of the farmers around here now just slit the carotid artery and let them bleed out so the body isn't doing the 'running around with no head' thing...

Sorry for your situation Ann. No easy answer. If I were trying to humanely kill a hen I didn't plan to eat I would use a shotgun with a head shot at close range. Hard to miss , quick and effective. I've killed roosters using various methods and all were disturbing and unpleasant.

Do you have a neighbor that can do 'the deed' for you ?? I've experienced the same tuning on several occasions and a good neighbor always comes to my rescue.
I tried 'ace-ing' a rooster to death and succeeded ... gave enough ace to put a 1500# horse to sleep ! ! Not an enjoyable event no matter what. Much rather allow our animals to be painless with the help of drugs and simply go to sleep. Good luck to you in finding what works best for you and your beloved chicken.
