I would Like to Know How to Increase the Chances For My Couturnix Quail to Go broody. What should I do to make them feel More in the Wild. lol I would I go the Extreme to Try to Get them to go broody. any Suggestions Would Definitley Help :D

Hi, I have tried for years, and have only had one go broody, and then stop on day 11.... I kept her with around 25 others in a huge earth-bottomed run, with lots of twigs, cinderblocks and stuff.. although most people here agree it is generally impossible as they have been domseticated far too long... granted, this would make an awesome reaserch project, if any of you BYC'ers would wanna try

I've had button quail go broody and raise chicks in an aviary setting. I wonder about having broody buttons raise some coturnix chicks and seeing if those would go broody too.

Sill I am personally enabling you to get some non jumbo coturnix eggs and let you buttons hatch them. Now that you have permission there is no reason not to try it

The other thing I would do trying to make coturnix go broody is make sure they don't see people. I'd put the feeders on a wall of the cage where I can fill them without the birds seeing me, maybe plywood one whole side or something.

I am doing a project similar to this with bobwhites. I have a large aviary (28x28 with 6' roof) it has pines and grass and sand and brushpiles. I installed a small pond and am planting small fruit trees.

The way I see it is to find the broodiest male (studies have shown that up to 25% of bobwhites in the wild are hatched by Dad) and female and I will put them in there together and see if I can develop a broody line.

OP, I would say the same as I've always done for chickens which is to give them tons of space and low stress, plenty of food and water, and some good hiding spots in the pen. I would expect anything hinting at broodiness to be a win with coturnix. Then maybe breed her and see if her chicks are broody when they grow up. When working with non-broodys it is best to play the numbers game in my experiences (chickens)

I would if I could! I don't have buttons anymore and the area where the aviary was has been taken over by the chickens. Oh and I don't have non jumbo cots either.

I have a pigeon sitting on a quail egg in a shoe box so when it hatches it cannot fall out. I will take it away at hatch time. I have a pigeon pair that seem to want to hatch anything! I think but by far do NOT know much you would do better with a pigeon, I think they can co habitate better with less disease risk then chickens but could be wrong. Anyone willing to chime in on this?
