How do I know if they have worms?

Chickens have worms. The objective is to keep the number of them down to an acceptable level. If they have worms really bad they will be skinny (you can feel the bones in their chest when you pick them up). The LA state vet recommends that you alternate ivermectin and safeguard so that you have less risk of the worms becoming immune to the dewormer. The Ivermectin deworms and kills mites and lice. A lot of people on here are hardwired against its use because it isn't "natural". Ivermectin is the main ingredient for heartworm meds for your pets and it is used to treat worms in humans, cows, pigs, etc.


DE does NOT deworm and Wazine is useless. I used both since I started keeping chickens. A few months ago, my chickens started getting "sick" and dying. I thought I was correctly deworming, so I called the state vet and they necropsied the deads hens. They said the chickens were full of parasites and that neither of the things I was using would kill the worms.

I disagree de and wazine work great. I also use wazine on my pigs and I have given it when they had worms and it cleared them all out. Also use apple cidar vinegar 1 tbsp per gallon. Always add this to their water .

If you're going to use ACV as a wormer, it wont prevent nor treat worms. Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer or safeguard liquid goat wormer will get rid of worms.

Understood, but if I want to throw it in as a preventative here-and-there, what is the frequency?

hi we have just got our first 4 chickens and had them for two days i have noticed when cleaning out there coop there's been a couple of poos that have had a stringy red piece running through the poo, I've tried to look up what this could be and some people say not to worry sometimes it can just be a one off and other people say it could be worms. if my chickens do have worms or are ill is it still safe to eat there eggs as we have 2 but not sure now if we should eat them until we find out whats wrong with our chickens. any help would be very appreciated thank you.

Maybe this is a dumb question but after worming the chickens, rather then throwing out the eggs, would it hurt to scramble them & feed them to the chickens for the protein benefit?

I am giving wazine to my flock of four, but what dosage do I use? It says 1 oz. takes care of 100 birds??!! Also how many weeks should we refrain from eating eggs, 2? We noticed worms in our dogs poop, so since the birds free range where the dogs go I figured I better deworm everyone!! Our dogs have had horrible fleas on top of it all... I can't catch a break. Bugs do not die in Florida like they do up north, so it's an endless battle....
