Hi I have just hatched my first chick, I only got one to hatch out of 12 but I was using a home made incubator and the first time I incubated I got no hatchers. I am now the proud mum [IMG] to a 2 day old lavender pekin bantam but what am I looking for to know if its a she or a he [IMG] ? and what age should I be able to know for sure?

It could take a few weeks to tell but you can post a pic under what breed is this? and someone will help you.

Congrats on the new baby chickie !
We just had our first chickie hatch too but ours are under our two extremly good mummy chickens. still got two under and they sitting beautifully so dont know if the other two will hatch but think its a good sign that they still on em. A friend of mine has told me that one of the ways tell if its a he or a she is to look at the comb on top of its head as it gets older as male chickies have bigger combs ! but i'm not sure when you can tell ... our little chickie still just looks like one ball of black feathers at the moment ... but i'm surprised how alert it is already ![IMG]
    Hope this helps
