I’m looking for some sage advice. NOT an emergence but health related. I have an almost 3 year old Lavender Cochin who came up lame April 22nd, 2020. Violet would not bear weight on her left foot, but had no visible swelling, injury or other illness. she had recently been busted of brooding and was getting picked on by the other 4 hens as she is at the bottom of the pecking order in a mild mannered small flock. So I guess she sustained an injury due to the aforementioned reintroduction and I took her to my bird Vet. After an X-ray the Vet said she has an infection in her left knee and put her on Clavamoxine 250mg every 12 hours for 14 days. It is May 17 and she is still limping. I have kept her in isolation with some daily exercise and I have given her 6 baby’s to take care of (which she loves). Improvement has been slow and yes she has watery stool and yes I’ve given her probiotics to help. My questions are:
how long can this take?
do I put her on more antibiotic? I’m sure the Vet will want to
is there anything else I can do to help her heal? Thanks for anyadv
I attached some pictures of her 8A9ED62A-F4F5-4163-A4EC-8C11089BCA02.jpeg 0B7903EF-E6EE-4E89-8269-54C0C0F88F45.jpeg D3DD2D3A-1BE0-492F-8DD2-C29752196A89.jpeg DF49E465-139D-4C2A-8228-15E1DA66A257.jpeg

Was there any break in the skin when she suffered the injury. Was there any broken bone or sprain, aside from the infection. If the infection was in the bone, osteomyelitis can be a serious infection. There could have been a hemorrhage of blood into the knee that caused infection, instead of bone infection. Arthritis or ligament damage could also take place. Do you know what antibiotic was prescribed? Was an anti-inflammatory used as well?

No visible tare in her skin, she had no palpable broken bones, no crunchy sounds in the joint, no warmer to the touch then the rest of her, no swollen spot. It is an assumption she was injured trying to get away from the other birds. She was put on Clavamox (?sp?) for 14 days. The Vet said all she could see on the x ray was the infection in the bone( no brakes) and said it is most likely from a blood infection that settles in the bone from an injury.

I would ask the vet if they have any concerns that she still is limping, and if that is okay. They would know best. If she is able to walk well enough to get around to food and water, that would be important. She might limp from now on, but hopefully, she will get better as time goes on. Other chickens will sometimes attack other chickens with a disability, so I would be slow to reintegrate her. A wire dog crate with food and water in site of the other chickens, along with supervised visits is best for gradual reintroduction.

Thank You, your thinking the same thing I’m thinking. Violet will be reintroduced slowly and with much supervision. she is the sweetest bird, sometimes too sweet and If all else fails I can put a diaper on her and bring her in the house.

Let us know how she gets along.
It’s so ironic, the very next day after posting my last msg, Violet has shown great improvement in her limp. She is getting stronger everyday and is loving her little flock of babies. 8BE0E19C-0B4C-42FB-ACBF-20F29A850F84.jpeg

Hi there! I know this is an old-ish thread but would love any advice. My silkie princess came up lame this past Wednesday, vet came out Thursday and diagnosed likely bone infection in her left foot. I rescued her from a bad situation and she had horrible scaly leg mites which probably contributed. She's on clavamox too, and meloxicam for pain, and has her own little cozy setup separate from the others (except for her BFF salmon faverolle :)). Did you do anything else to support Violet's recovery? It's so hard to watch them hurt!!!
