How do I pick up my Chicks?

Some just don't like to be held.

The 7 week old Ancona that I just got from AZNessa is so flighty it HATES to be held.
On the other hand, I have my Wheaten Ameraucanas and Dolly (my Miss_Jayne designer chick) that just loved to be held and stroked!

I've found that if I spend time with them, those who like to be held will just jump up on my lap.

Keep in mind that it's best if you get down on their level before you try to pick them up.
Chickens of all ages really dislike being scooped up from above, ala predator style.

Each of my birds is unique. Some don't like having their feet hang, other don't care. I prefer to let their feet hang b/c they don't always keep their feet very, um, clean.

My chickens range from not wanting me to touch them to wanting me to pick them up and pet. Today was a first for one of my young hens. She usually hangs around when I go into the coop but didn't want me to pick her up. Today she let me and though she wasn't sure if she liked it or not she sat still and let me pet and talk to her. I have one that when she sees me in the coop she runs to me for her daily dose of love. She is so sweet. She just does her little noises as I pet and talk to her. But outside the coop she will run from me. She's too busy chasing bugs and eating grass to take the time for a little love.
