We have a white chicken who has a couple open sores around her wings. We think a hawk grabbed her because we found a bunch of white feathers in a pile and she had open sores. The feathers are starting to grow back but now the other chickens are pecking her and the area is not healing. How do I disguise a white chicken so the others don’t peck those spots?

You'll have the same problem regardless of her color. But it's definitely interesting how easy it is to see her wounds. That's actually a help to you.

Do you have a dog crate? It's a great first step for isolating her from the flock. If you have scrap lumber and some hardware cloth, you can pretty quickly build a pen for her. You can even keep it in your chicken run so long as the others don't have super extender beaks and can peck her through the wire.

Is she doing okay otherwise?

blue-kote is made to help wounds heal and stop chickens from pecking at them. It's essentially an antiseptic with blue dye in it. Chickens are attracted to and peck at red. So covering it with blue will eliminate the appeal and the antiseptic will keep it healthy

I've heard that Blu-Kote is often used in cases like this. It seems that chickens are more likely to peck red things, plus there's healing stuff in the Blu-Kote.

We do have a dog crate so it would be easy to separate her but keep her near the flock. She is great other than her sores—thank you!
