Hello Again, I had written about a month ago, concerning my increasingly unhappy male ring-necked dove. I found him a partner and they have fallen in love; they seem very happy. They have made a nest in a planter in my bathroom, where they are currently living (see photo below).
Five days ago, two eggs were laid and they have been sitting on them as devoted parents, taking turns. I would love to have many doves, but two more is not an option. I understand the eggs can be swapped for dummies and have purchased the fake eggs on Amazon.
Do you have any advice on doing the switch? Should I do it in the dark, so they don't recognize me? Should my friend do it, so that my relationship with the doves is not impacted? Is there a good time or way to do this? Also, how are my doves going to respond, will they be troubled and sad? Is this something I will need to do several times each year? Will they continue to lay and care for eggs even after several failed attempts?
I would appreciate any help that more experienced dove owners/breeders can provide.
Thank you very much,
Jenna
