How Do I Scoot Broody's Out to Eat Etc.?

Awww what a good mama! And I think that line of thinking is wise, to let her decide

The only time I ever interact with broodies, and this actually happened today, is when they stay on the nest too long. As I said, I'm totally hands off, so that means I don't mark eggs and check to see if any more are laid. There are always more eggs laid, and silkies will tag team a nest, two broody birds in one nest. When the first chicks hatch, the hens are too afraid the other hen will steal the chicks, so sometimes they won't leave the nest. I've had 2 hens hatching chicks since Sunday. This morning they were both still on the nest with 8 babies under them, 2 obviously hatched recently. I took one hen down, gave her the six oldest chicks, and left the other on the nest with the 2 wet ones. I will give her another day or 2 to see if she gets any more, then if she hasn't gotten off on her own I will take her and the chicks down and remove any remaining eggs. Like I said, this is only how I do it, and some people would probably cringe to read it, but it works for me. When the hatch is complete, both mommies will raise the chicks together, taking turns teaching them how to be chickens and covering them when they are cold. That's what the pic I posted was. Those 2 mommies came off the nest together with all the chicks in April

I'll try and get out there and take photo's of all the broodys with babies.. I did notice My Molted Java (my most trusted broody) had left her chicks this morning, they are about 5 weeks which is her limit, she was checking out the nesting boxes and then went to her guy and squatted for him.. She will be laying again soon..
Being that she is my best I had actually given her 8 turkey eggs, she sat those and I sat Chicken eggs in the incubator to hatch at the same time. When the hatches were complete I took the turkeys from her and gave her the chicken chicks... She didn't fuss at all.
I have several breeds of chickens, and my silkies, non SQ d'uccle, and cuckoo marans will all brood chicks. I have chicks everywhere this time of year

although I have heard they are some of the best broodys!! I sold my Marans, neither were good Momma's, destroying the eggs/chicks as they were hatching.. I currently have Jersey Giants (all of which have now hatched chicks) some of their offspring who are on their first go around, my most beloved Molted Java and a couple Cochins. I have broken a leghorn cross, excellent sitters, horrible hatcher.. May give her another try later this year, and I am with ya, this time of year I am over run with chicks..

Blue Orp/ Jersey Giant mix

3 month old Orphans

One of the 4+ month old orphans, she has 6 sisters running around somewhere.. This does not include chicks moved to the grow out pen.. The Molted java has pretty much left her chicks, I usually take them at that point and let them hang out in the grow out pen until they get a bit bigger

The first hatch in my marans pen was total destruction. This year I've had two with no casualties

Great looking birds you have

Thank you! I am pretty proud of my flock although I am probably going to be selling most of them this fall when all the pullets come into lay. I have had some serious lung and breathing issues and we believe the coop and chickens is part of my issue, I do well for a few weeks then get hit again.. I've tried everything short of wearing a hazmat suit but nothing has helped .. Its time to downsize, DH and I are ready for some time for just us without the added stress of needing someone to care for the property and animals.
