I like calcium always available for them, free choice. So I feed eggs shells steadily. Every 3-4 days I dry all the shells I have, crush and toss them to the girls.
We keep a 'back-up' bag of oyster shell. If I run low on egg shells, I feed the oyster shell.
We don't feed them anymore. Everytime we did we always ended up with egg eaters. I never thought about mixing it into their feed. That might work, we had always just washed, dryed crushed and put in the yard. I guess they could still tell what is was or maybe just coincidence
We just use oyster shells (free choice). Some day maybe I will get brave and try adding them to their feed, I just don't want to have to cull any more egg eaters
Good for a calcium supplement. It's VERY important, though, that you crush or grind them into tiny pieces. You don't want them to associate eggshells with food, or when they feel any dietary stress, they may begin to eat their own eggs.
I agree, but after putting much effort into washing & baking, I decided to heck with all the bother. I just crush mine and mix into my other chicken slop (household scraps). My hens are not so "gifted" that they can mentally reassemble the egg shells. Now, those of you with the "above average" or genius level poulty might just have to make more of an effort!
