Yes look for the foam. when they are mating you will start to see little daps here and there. Turn them over one by one rub the vent, the males will "foam" the females not. Just make sure the neighbors aren't around and if they show up don't tell them you are "exciting" your quail.

thanks! ummm, maybe i'll have hubby do this chore...
what age do i do it at??
Ya good job for hubby, get some pics and you can use them for blackmail, next time you want some more birds and he says no just show the pics.
We just wait for when we start seeing foam on the cage.
Believe me, you will KNOW when your a&m's are crowing!! Mine were so annoying!! They kind of shake their head when they are crowing too, so if you are in there you'll know which one it is.
You can keep 5 females for each male, especially if you have them in a colony. I wouldn't have less than 3 females, cause the males can and will hurt them by overbreeding them.
monarc23's thread on coturnix shows how to vent sex them, and that is the only way with white quail, short of waiting for eggs or crowing. My a&m males started crowing at not even 5 weeks old.
You can put them outside once it is warmer. I like the garage idea, too bad I don't have one.
