hi i have a flock of 10 1 rooster and 9 hens i have a chihuahua mix that i would love to train to like chickens how would i get him to like chickens he is mixed with dachshund he is very sweet any tips are welcome thanks to all help

I think it all depends on the dog. I'm not sure if you can "train" a dog to be docile around chickens, it depends on the personality. Perhaps take him on a leash and let him see them, then see how he reacts? I'd go from there.

My dog like to terrorise the chickens but they can sure give it back. He is actually quite scared of them now but still tires to play. We have occasions when they get on..... Like sharing corn

Hope you sort them out soon.

My three dogs vary in their approach.

My chihuahua is indifferent and slightly afraid.
My pom is indifferent but loves to run at them, then divert at the last minute.
My mutt is indifferent depending on her mood. She likes to chase them but has yet to actually attack any or put any in her mouth.

The dog whisperer has a couple good videos on the subject, which greatly helped us to train our dogs to be responsible around our chickens (I don't think they "like" them, but they respect that the chickens belong to me and I am the alpha around here). It took us a couple solid months to get them from wanting to eat the birds to a time of civil truce, to where they are now - hanging out with them in the yard peacefully. They even do a bit of defending - especially from hawks - which I greatly appreciate.

I have an English setter that we hunt pheasants with. So when I got chickens I figured that I’d have some loss before he understood, but that wasn’t the case. The chickens came to me full grown from a friend who also sent the coop. When I first introduced then to each other he was very puzzled, we’d always hunted birds, and now these are here but we’re not hunting them. Each time he approached the pen I told him ‘no’, and called him away. Treats and praise! First on a leash but then just loose. Now he runs the yard with them. They pretty much ignore him, and while he finds them interesting, he has no aggression or hunt8ng action toward them. It was a piece of cake really!

I'd bet that was because you had already trained your dog,
you both were well versed in your commands.
