I discovered one of our hens has a cracked beak. I can't get a good picture; she doesn't like to be handled. It appears to have a small notch on the side with a crack that goes from one side to the other of her upper beak. It is approximately 2cm from the tip of her beak to the upper part. It is discolored a dark grey. She is foraging and eating ok. Do I treat it in any way or just leave it be? She is a Buff Orpington about 14 months old. She is still laying eggs several times a week. Thank you.

Mine lost half of the whole top of her beak - the hard part came off and disappeared. Still don't know how she did it. The under part was soft and tender, but she still ate food with it from dog bowls, and got water out of our horizontal nipple waterers with it. I think she used the bottom hard part of her beak to activate the nipple waterers. I kept an eye on her and she seemed to be getting food and water fine, so I did nothing else.

The hard shell grew back in a few months.

I wasn't sure if I should cut it off or not so I'm going to let nature take care of it.
I have no idea how she did it either. There are myriad ways in this yard for self injury with the trees, shrubs, chairs, tree logs laying around, etc. I'm out with them all the time when they are out and I never noticed an 'owie' as it occurred.
Thank you for your reply. It's comforting to know all will be well.
