I hold mine the same way I hold a pen or pencil and adjust pressure to create the desired effect when blending. You can try using stumps too, I think they hold up better than tortillons, but that is just an opinion. I hope this helps and isn't too vague.
Stumps are made of a denser material. Tortillons are really tightly wrapped paper. They both work really well though. A lot of people use stumps for larger areas and tortillons for smaller details, but both come in a variety of sizes. I don't really follow traditional uses of art supplies, the one I use is usually whichever one is closer at the moment I need it.
Once you get used to using them you'll be able to figure out which you like better, you might like them equally. I don't notice a huge difference in the quality of blending, I think that mostly depends on the artist and their patience with blending things.
I'd recommend practicing on maybe some simple shapes just to experiment with different results. When I'm testing out new art supplies, I usually draw a bunch of shapes and then play with the textures and shadows. Cubes and spheres are always fun. I had an art teacher in grade school who made us draw an apple on the first day of class every semester to get us used to the new supplies we were given.
