How do skunks attack chickens ??

I had a skunk attempt to dig under a gate to a pen my chicks were in. There pop door was partially closed enough that they couldn't get into the coop. I had a standoff with the skunk. The skunk lost.

Skunks are mostly scavengers, and predators on things like worms and slugs. They have small mouths, clumsy feet, and poor eyesight. IMHO they get blamed for a lot of things they don't do!

OTOH, I'm sure any self-respecting skunk would be happy to help you clean up any eggs that you leave lying around. They could also kill baby chicks. But if you're losing adult birds, I'd suspect a raccoon a LOOOOONG time before a skunk.

Not true. Skunks kill chickens. We just shot a skunk that killed our chicks last night and killed a hen tonight. We caught it in the act.

I love resurrecting old threads. In my opinion the information is as pertinent now as it was then when it was posted. I have had skunk issues too. Good luck...
