The length of them are 17-18 inches long, 14 inches wide and 12 inch for height. The opening is approx 8 high with 3 inch piece on the bottom, 1 inch board on the top for extra support. I have 26 hens of larger breeds, barred rocks, new hampshires, rhode island reds, austrolaurps,EE's and my favorites Delawares. I have put a golf in each box. I was hesitant about the 4 inches thinking it may be to high, if they start throwing out the straw I will put a 4 inch piece and take the top 1 inch support off.
I think they are also called apple boxes. But my folks and others call them potato crates. Ask around some old time farmers may just have them laying around.
