How do you call your chickens?

Mine come to their names. If that doesn't work, I get food, and say, ' here (insert name) , food, (insert name)' and they all come. Sometimes they come to each other's names, and if they see me out when they're free ranging, they usually come without being called. Every time we have a cookout the follow every one that has food around. Some of the guests find it a little unnerving.

Okay after bragging about being able to get my chickens to come in at noon time so I can leave for work...I found a glitch in my plan. After two years of using this method, today it failed.

Never have I read in any chicken book or forum that chickens are afraid of long gauze skirts!

I never wear a skirt but it was hotter than blazes here today. I opened the coop door, they came running. Saw the skirt and left in a panic, chickens everywhere. Even had some fly over a 5 foot fence. And there was no way the rooster was letting his girls back in that coop with that skirt.

verthandi, that hilarious. I have heard of them being deathly afraid of day dresses (muu-muu's) but not a skirt. I suppose its all the same in their eyes.

On the other hand, my girls think brightly colored muu muu's mean a treat cuz thats all my 83 year old mom ever wears around the house, and she doesnt go out to them UNLESS she has a goodie. And they KNOW it. So to mine, the muu muu means gramma and "treat". They love to peck/grab the edge and pull on it, to tell her...here I am, where's my goodie?

Mine are used to getting treats that every time they hear the porch gate sqeak they come running. Every time I say here chick, chick, etc. or here babies...the ducks quack very loudly and it sounds like they are either mocking me or laughing at me. LOL

Thndrdancr...it was pretty funny. I never even gave it a thought. It took over 15 minutes to get the rooster back in the coop....even using my skirt to block his escape.

And of course trying to catch the escaped hens with that dang skirt on was almost as fun. Glad no one had a camera near by, and it didn't make the best excuse for being late for work

We don't get our chicks until the week of June 8th, but i was thinking i would call them like "here bok boks!"... but idk if that will work, cuz it seems they like "e" endings when you call them, lol.
