How do you care for your breeding birds?

It was close to $13 back in the summer but I usually feed a homemade laying mash that my feed store grinds fresh. It has a lot of corn in it but it's all locally grown corn, oats, wheat, and other grains.I pay $10 per bag for it and then get a bag Layena or the TSC 16% pellets to throw at them for treats as well as some scratch feed. The chickens think it's a treat but they are just getting more layer feed. lol They also get scraps from the table of which rice is their favorite.

I've got two discounted bags of TSC's 15% grower finisher for $8 the other day so I'm going to try that when their feeder needs filling up.

Fishmeal when available here is $49 for a 40# bag. That is too expensive for me to feed chickens, I'll buy myself a grass fed beef standing rib roast for that price and enjoy several meals from it. LOL

So its ok to feed them turkey/game bird feed? There is nothing around that has chicken food with more than 17% and that would be the only thing I could get that high.

$49 for a bag of any feed. To pricey for me.

Same thing here.Other than the Turkey and Quail stuff at TSC, nobody sell anything higher in protein.

I was able to get mine for $41 for 50 lbs. Adding to my bulk feed order kept the shipping down to a manageable level.
