How do you catch a chicken?

Unless you're in a hurry, I usually just wait till sundown, then you can just go pick them up. Otherwise try throwing a sheet over it.

It takes reverse psychology. I tell my Granddaughter over and over again that you "can't chase a chicken!" You just get a bit of their favorite treat and make sure that chickie sees it. Now she will follow you anywhere.

I have used a fishing net as well. It does frighten them but if you are quick you can grab the chicken to keep her from breaking a wing. I have also used a broom to guide them back where they need to go. It works really well as they are not frightened by it and you can keep a distance from the chicken as well. Around here sometimes it takes three or four of us if I need the chickens in early.

I just did a search for Chicken Catching Hook and found several, all looking pretty much the same, but the prices - Boy, HOWDY, were they all different!

Cutler Supply online has 'em "Chicken Hook" for only $7.95. Not bad. Shipping may bump that up a bit, though...

Just thought I'd share the info for the "manufacturing challenged" like me.

I was wondering how everyone does it. They sure are slippery. One actually climbed up my head and jumped over me....

Sounds like Super Chicken, able to leap tall humans in a single bound!

I have the Cutler Supply Chicken Catcher. This comes in very handy when getting them out of the chicken tractor. Other times, they stay close to the run looking for a way back in, and I just "herd" them in that direction. In the run, cornering them works best for me. So, it depends on the circumstances.

I agree herding works for the masses, but when you have to catch one out in the yard....man, that's hard. My little guys are penned up until they become old enough. I can catch them easily in the pen, though, they hate it. I force them everyday and it seems to help when I've had a couple of them escape to the outside world and I wanted them back in.
