how do you check a chickens ears esp for mites?

I dont see any video on checking a chickens ears... on you tube,,,,
Rooo shakes his head quite a bit lately esp that its cold outside....I seen him scratch some his ear area... same as for the several hens.. Just scratching occ with them...
 
If you shine a bright light right on the area, it can help...

Also, hold by their feet and part the feathers around their vent. If you shine the light there and see little clear or red bugs scatter, there's a good chance your chicken has external parasites.

Treatment: Sevin dust (available at Lowes/Home Depot) on each chicken on the vent and under the wings. Dust the coop after you clean the bedding. Repeat in seven days. Repeat AGAIN in seven days after that. Three treatments, every seven days.
