I use chopped-straw-like-stuff and I spot clean every few days, but I have to spot clean the nest boxes every morning because one of my hens sleeps in there and I don't want dirty eggs. I clean out all the bedding every one - three months. I used to have to clean it weekly but this cool new bedding means I can do it a lot less:) The bedding doesn't have a name, I get it from a local store. But i can post a pic.
So what do you do?
Just interested!

I use pine shavings I get at the feed store sold in big bales for horse stalls.
Make sure your roosts are higher than the nests so they won't be inclined to sleep in them.
If they are, kick her out and block the nests for the night and she'll get with the program.

The nests are on floor-level, the roosts are much higher up. I've tried that too, she is just very strange! I don't mind, I just scoop it out in the morning before they lay.. I don't think there's much else I can do:\
What kind of system do you use? (like, spot clean, deep litter, etc.. I don't know what other people call them I've just made the names up

I also use pine shavings, but may soon switch to shredded newspaper to cut costs. Essentially, I have a 4-5 inch bed which I pick mess out of every few days or so. I also stir up the pine shavings once a week to keep it fresh. Every month, I sweep out the pine and add a new batch. I bought a compressed bag at petsmart (the largest size available) made by a company called Greater Choices or something, and I put the entire thing in. The bag cost $11 dollars, so it is cheap, but since I have an abundance of newspaper I want to start using that.

I spot clean with a large kitty litter scooper & then strip the coop/run every few months as needed.

Yeah I use newspaper in the winter sometimes too, it works quite well.

Shredded newspaper is what I've always been instructed to use...If it is just laid down flat it can apparently become quite slippery. If you are traditional and still read newsprint (like my father and I), then it is certainly economical to use.
