I know you are not supposed to wash an egg in water but use a dry cloth on it. But... if there is a splotch of poop on it do you keep it and if so do how do you clean it?

Unfortunately, my light breeds sleep in the next boxes so the eggs are going to, at times, have poop on them. I need to know the safe way of dealing with this so nobody gets sick from bad bacteria.

mine don't sleep in the nesting boxes but i just use a damp throw away towel and then dry it off quickly if there is any grit or anything on it.
i have a book on raising chickens and that is what the author suggest.

Eggs have a protective coating on them thats called a bloom. It helps preserve the egg and keep it fresh. You can wash a dirty egg just use slightly warmer water than the egg as cold water can let bacteria into the egg.

I only wash the ones that need it and use them first. If they don't need it don't wash them. But it will not hurt if you need to wash a really dirty one.

We don't bother. Most of our eggs come out of the nest clean. For the ones we eat I don't care about a spot here or there. The neighbors don't care too much either. Every now and again I'll take extras into work and give them away to whoever wants them and I'll give them the cleanest eggs.
