How do You Collect Eggs?

My egg apron is bib-type and has two pockets. I can fit 6 to 8 eggs in each pocket. I walk with a cane (bad ankle!), so it's helpful to have a hand free to do other things, like scatter scratch and open gates, rather than carry eggs in a basket.

No, I got two of them from Wal-Mart a couple of years ago. The other one is kind of a burgundy color. I really like them, they're kind of soft, not real stiff. I like the bib style because the eggs can get kind of heavy and the weight is carried around my neck, not my waist.

I’ll probably get an apron one at some point it’s nice to have variety

I love the pattern on it. I am getting mine tomorrow and I am going to tell my husband not to collect the eggs in the morning so I can do it with my new apron.

Seriously, I keep egg cartons in a storage area above the coop, I just start filling them as I go from Coop to coop, if one fills up I put it down and grab another carton, then I carry them all in when I am done collecting. Some I mark for hatching with the date and put them in a separate cartons.

Those aprons with all the individual pockets....look like a massive multi egg pocket omelet waiting to happen. Sillier than chicken sweaters.

Even when I carry eggs in hoodie pouch or baggy pants pockets I hold them so they don't swing/bounce...maybe with the individual pouches that's not a problem, but putting on an apron to go get eggs is not in my repertoire.

I've thankfully never broken an egg inside a pocket before

I've cracked a few, but no leakers, usually shoveling snow with eggs in jacket pockets.
Wasn't until just last week I got a 'leaking down yer leg pocket omelet'.
Jammie pants pockets too tight for that many eggs,
bent over to pick something up and a thin shelled egg broke.

My daughter crocheted me this adorable basket from plastic grocery bags.

It's lightweight and strong. It has a very pleasant feel in my hand. I can scrunch it up and put it in my pocket.

I also use it to collect what I pick in the morning. And if something is muddy, I can hose it off right in the basket because it will drain away and there's no fiber to get moldy. Mine is about 11"x6"x 4" and perfect for a mornings gathering.

If you feel like upcycling some free grocery bags, Google "plarn" and you'll find lots of free tutorials and patterns. If you collect enough different bags you can make a solid color or plan some stripes or a design of some kind. I just love the funky organic look my daughter created. Perfect for funky old me.

I found this pattern for making an egg collecting apron if anyone is feeling handy. There are also lots of YouTube videos for making them including one that adapts a pillowcase into large pockets that can hold produce as well as eggs.
